Hefei, designated by China's State Council as a key central city in the Yangtze River Delta, a national comprehensive transportation hub, an advanced manufacturing base in Central China, and a regional center for scientific and technological innovation, serves as the vital political, economic, cultural, and educational heart of Anhui Province. Renowned for its robust economic vitality and thriving innovation ecosystem, Hefei ranks among China's foremost cities in scientific research and technological advancement. Welcome to Hefei—a city brimming with innovative energy and warm hospitality.
01.An Internationally Influential City of Innovation
Hefei hosts China’s first fully operational national laboratory. The city integrates 12 major science infrastructures, including those operational, under construction, and planned. It is home to 60 institutions of higher education—including the prestigious University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)—8 research institutes funded by the central government, and 12 national (key) laboratories. Hefei ranks 55th among global science and technology clusters and 16th among global research cities. Key highlights include:

As China’s first fully operational national laboratory, spearheaded by Academician Pan Jianwei and anchored by USTC, it aims to secure global leadership in quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum precision measurement. It has achieved breakthrough international milestones including the "Micius" quantum satellite, the "Beijing-Shanghai" quantum secure communication trunk line, and the "Jiuzhang" quantum computer.

Centered on "Science Island" (Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences) within the Hefei Future Science City (spanning 19.2 sq km at the junction of Luyang and Changfeng counties), this world-class cluster of research facilities operates across three tiers—operational, under construction, and planned—focusing on frontier breakthroughs in energy revolution and materials science.

Hefei has established a strategic emerging industrial landscape focused on core pillars: "Core" (integrated circuits), "Screen" (new displays), "Auto" (new energy vehicles), and "Integration" (AI-enabled convergence), complemented by "Safety" (emergency security industry), "Terminals" (smart devices), "Life" (biomedicine), and "Intelligence" (AI industry). Its advanced manufacturing thrives, with integrated circuits, new displays, and AI recognized among China's first national-level strategic emerging industrial clusters. The intelligent voice industry forms a national advanced manufacturing cluster. Hefei is the permanent host of the World Manufacturing Convention.
New energy vehicle (NEV) production ranks among China's highest.
Photovoltaic manufacturing ranks 3rd nationally.
Quantum information capabilities rank 2nd globally.
The integrated circuit ecosystem clusters over 450 enterprises, with ChangXin Memory Technologies filling the gap in domestic DRAM production and Nexchip Integration rising to the world's top three in wafer foundry services.

02.An Ancient Capital with Cultural Charm
Hefei, historically known as Luzhou, is a significant cradle of Jianghuai culture and a renowned historical city. As one of China's first National Historical and Cultural Cities, its founding traces back to the Qin Dynasty (over 2,300 years ago). During the Three Kingdoms period, it was a crucial military stronghold contested by Wei and Wu. The Northern Song Dynasty gave rise to Bao Zheng (Lord Bao), whose incorruptible spirit is immortalized at the Bao Zheng Memorial Temple and the Lianquan Well (Well of Integrity) on Baohe River, becoming a symbol of Chinese judicial integrity. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as the cradle of the Huai Army, historical sites like Li Hongzhang's Former Residence and the mansions of Huai Army generals bear witness to modern China's transformation. The Ming-Qing era streets of Sanhe Ancient Town and the former residence of Nobel laureate Chen-Ning Yang reflect its enduring cultural legacy. This profound historical layering and continuous cultural transmission underscore Hefei's indispensable role as an ancient capital within the diverse tapestry of Chinese civilization.
Xiaoyaojin Park: Also known as the "Ancient Xiaoyaojin Battlefield," this historical site dates back to the Three Kingdoms period. It commemorates the famed Battle of Xiaoyaojin, where General Zhang Liao achieved a remarkable victory against overwhelming odds, showcasing his military genius. Today, the park blends historical relics like the Xiaoyao Pavilion with serene natural landscapes (lush gardens, tranquil lakes). Cultural activities and exhibitions vividly bring the Three Kingdoms era to life, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and visitors.

Located in Baohe Park (No. 72 Wuhu Road, Baohe District), the temple originated as Bao Zheng's childhood study site. Built in 1489 (Ming Dynasty) and formally named in 1539, the current complex, reconstructed in 1882 (Qing Dynasty) with funds from Li Hongzhang, features white walls, black tiles, and a courtyard layout. Covering one hectare, it includes the main hall (housing an eight-foot statue of Bao Zheng and replicas of the legendary "Dragon," "Tiger," and "Dog Head" execution blades), the Lianquan Well (Well of Integrity), and stele corridors. It displays precious artifacts like Bao Zheng's epitaph and rubbings from the Kaifeng Prefecture Magistrate's Name Record Stele. As a key provincial cultural protection unit and one of Hefei's "Three Major Historical Sites" alongside Xiaoyaojin Park and Mingjiao Temple, it stands as a vital symbol of integrity culture and Song Dynasty history.

Situated 32 km southwest of Hefei city center, this 2,500-year-old town is a quintessential Jiangnan water town. Its name, "Three Rivers" (Sanhe), derives from the Fengle, Hangbu, and Xiaonan rivers flowing through it. Covering 2.9 sq km, the town is characterized by Ming-Qing style architecture—white-washed walls, black tiles, red pillars, and smooth bluestone-paved streets—creating a picturesque scene. Key attractions include:

Dr. Chen-Ning Yang, a Nobel laureate in Physics, has deep roots in Sanhe—his mother was born here. In 1937, seeking refuge from war, she brought the young Yang back to the town, where he received part of his education. The residence now exhibits precious photographs and documents related to his life and work.
